Dental Crowns are one of the most recommended restorations that people need on their teeth. Crowns, even with dental insurance, can be costly and require a fair amount of time in a dental chair. At Lima Dental Associates, we strive to educate our patients about every option available to them.
So, what is a crown?
A dental crown is a tooth shaped cover or cap that encases the tooth. chair. It restores the size, shape, strength, and functions of a tooth and is used in both children and adults.
Reasons a crown are suggested include:
Trauma: whether it’s a fall, sporting accident, or car accident a damaged or broken tooth may need a crown.
Wear: do you grind your teeth? What about acid reflux? Teeth can erode or wear away. Causes often include grinding or erosion from acid reflux. In many cases, a crown is the only solution to repairing the strength, shape, and function of the tooth.
Large fillings: When a tooth has more filling than tooth remaining a crown is recommended to prevent larger fractures or even loss of the tooth.
Root canal: Teeth become brittle after root canals have been performed because the nerve has been removed and the tooth no longer has a blood supply. A crown over the top the tooth is recommended to provide strength as well as seal the nerve from getting any more infection in it
Cracked tooth: Teeth have to last a lifetime and due to normal wear and tear they can crack. This can lead to a tooth breaking. Rather than risk losing the entire tooth we recommend a crown.
Cosmetic: Some people just aren’t happy with the shape and/ or color of their teeth. An option for them is to crown or cover their existing tooth giving it a desired shape and/or color.
Implants: A dental implant is a replacement for the root of a missing tooth. The root is the part of the tooth you do not see and is below the gum line. A crown may be placed on the implant to provide you with a new tooth. This has become a very popular way to replace missing teeth.
Is it wise to wait?
One of three things could happen by waiting to get a recommended crown
• Nothing will happen
• Waiting could lead to the need for a root canal
• The tooth will break beyond repair
