Sports Dentistry

May 8, 2017

Dental injuries during sport participation are one of the most common types of mouth injuries. The National Youth Sports Foundations contends that an athlete is 60 times more likely to sustain a mouth injury when he or she does not wear a protective mouth guard.

A mouth guard is a soft plastic device that is molded to fit the teeth. Mouth guards should not slip or move around.  A mouth guard protects the teeth from chips and fractures during contact sports. Mouth guards are also significant in decreasing concussion risk because they absorb the shock while stabilizing the jaw.

Mouth guards should be worn for any contact sport. Examples include basketball, baseball, wrestling, hockey, softball, lacrosse, and so on….

It’s also important to drink water during practice and games. This will help to rinse the teeth as well as rehydrate the body!

Call us today to schedule for your custom mouth guard.  It will take about 15 minutes to get the necessary impressions of the teeth and within a week we can have a custom guard that will protect your teeth from injury!

Until next time,

Keep smiling, caring, and sharing!
