Sleep Disorders: A Growing Problem

dreamstime_xs_48815752Sleep Disorders are a growing problem in our society. It’s not uncommon for patients to describe trouble sleeping, excessive daytime sleepiness, snoring, inability to sleep, and even stopping breathing during the night.

Stopping breathing is our greatest concern. Sleep apnea can occur in anyone. During apnic events a person repeatedly stops and starts breathing during sleep. Most people do not realize that their breathing starts and stops. Usually it is a sleep partner or family member who notices the gasps for air and or loud snoring.

Some key signs to watch for include:
Daytime drowsiness/ need for naps
Irritability
Forgetfulness
Depression
Falling asleep while driving

While lifestyle changes may help treat mild cases of sleep apnea, more severe cases will need to be monitored by a sleep professional. Untreated sleep apnea can cause a host of problems including heart issues, high blood pressure, and stroke

Treatment of sleep apnea includes keeping the airway open in order to maintain a constant flow of air. As we mentioned a few moments ago lifestyle change is one method used in mild cases, in moderate to severe cases of sleep apnea dental devices such as this (MOSES MODEL) are used to pull the lower jaw forward and keeping the airway open. When a dental device is not enough to maintain a healthy airway a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) device is used. It is best to talk with a doctor who specialized in sleep problems to find out which is best!
