Have you ever read all the side effects of the medications your are on? Medications- both prescription and over the counter-
can have an extreme effect on the oral cavity. Some of the most common side effects include:
Dry mouth
Burning tongue
Mouth sores
Halitosis
Enlarged gums
Bone Loss
Tooth Decay
Thrush
These symptoms can come from pain medicines, blood pressure medicines, heart medicines…and even over the counter supplement s. There are more than 400 medications alone that cause dry mouth. Let’s look a little closer at over the counter supplements because these medications don’t tell you their known side effects.

American Ginsing has been linked to Steven-Johnson’s Syndrome

Johns Wart side effects include photosensitivity, GI disturbance, allergic reactions, fatigue, dizziness, confusion, and dry mouth

Ginkgo Biloba and Vitamin E both when taken with aspirin can cause increased bleeding

And Vitamin C in large does can weaken the efficiency of anesthesia.

The key is to talk to your dental professional and let them know all of the medications and supplements you are on prior to treatment!
