What to eat and why.

It seems that most dental advice related to food is generally to tell people what they should not eat. It does seem to take the fun out of it when all the lists are no-no’s, which makes me want to share a list of YES foods for your TEETH!

There are actually foods that promote dental health, and it won’t surprise you that the list includes foods that are good for your overall health.

Apple cartoonFor instance, raw, crunchy vegetables are great snacks for your teeth. Carrots, broccoli and celery help to scrape away plaque and massage your gums and teeth. Celery, in particular produces more saliva, which neutralizes bacteria. Onions also fight bacteria – they may not be so good for your breath, but they’re good for your mouth!

An apple a day may help to keep the dentist away…

Apples help to scrape away plaque, while raisins act like celery in producing saliva-neutralizing bacteria. Raisins also contain phytochemicals, which suppress bacterial growth.

Nuts – especially walnuts and almonds are also good to provide calcium, magnesium and phosphate, all of which are good for your teeth. And of course, high calcium dairy foods like yogurt, milk and cheese are good for your teeth and bones. And by the way, the calcium you want for healthy teeth is not buried in the dairy fat – so low-fat versions of diary products work just as well for your teeth and better for your overall health.

Start munching and crunching on these safe snacks and remember to keep smiling!

All the best to you and your family,

Dr. Erik Risolvato
